Michael L. Hutchings

Michael L. Hutchings practices law in the area of real estate development in Sandy, Utah. In 1998, he retired as the Third District Court Judge having served for fifteen years on the Utah State trial court bench. During his tenure on the bench, he served on many community boards and task forces including three years on the Utah State Judicial Council and thirteen years on the editorial board of the Utah Bar Journal.

Michael graduated from the J. Reuben Clark Law School in 1979. While in law school he served as a member of the BYU Law Review. Before being appointed to the bench, he served for three years as a city attorney for West Valley City. Earlier, he served as an associate attorney in the law firm of Senior and Senior in Salt Lake City, Utah.

As a trustee of the Mormon Historic Sites Foundation since 1993, Michael has been involved in a number of projects undertaken by the Foundation including the development of Ensign Peak, the Kirtland flats restoration project, archaeological investigations at Haun's Mill and the burial ground at Far West, Missouri. Most recently, he helped coordinate the placement of a marker in Lexington, Missouri, honoring the Mormon immigrants killed in 1852 on the steamboat Saluda.

He is married to the former Martha Shill and are the parents of nine children.
